GROUP THERAPY
Group therapy offers something different from individual therapy: when the group comes together it provides a microcosm of the everyday world of its members.  They have the opportunity to demonstrate in the room behaviors and ways of interacting that cause them difficulty in their day-to-day life. Someone once said that in individual therapy people come in and talk about their issues and in group therapy they come in and have their issues with others.  This characteristic of group therapy provides a venue where people can allow themselves to impact and be
impacted by others, learn through observation, and experiment with new skills and ways of interacting.  For a group therapist to understand what is happening in the room at any given time and to understand how best to help members engage with each other requires specialized training.

I am a trained and Certified Group Psychotherapist.  I have been leading groups for more than 25 years and am active at the national level with the American Group Psychotherapy Association and locally with the Atlanta Group Psychotherapy Society.

I have been involved in providing training for other group therapists through AGPA and AGPS at both a local and national level.  Through AGPS in Atlanta we have provided training required for the CGP credential and other offerings on group therapy over the years.

I currently run group in my practice and I use an interpersonal approach. My groups are usually co-ed, but I have run single gender groups in the past.  Members commit for a minimum of twelve weeks, but they usually stay much longer as they find that their work helps them attain better relationships and an understanding of themselves in relation to others.

You can discover more about group through the website of the American Group Psychotherapy Association at www.agpa.org.

Locally you can go to the Atlanta Group Psychotherapy Society website at www.atlantagps.org to obtain more information about group therapists in your area.
